Responding to today's announcement by the Scottish Government that it has decided to proceed with the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, Chair of Nestrans, Cllr Kevin Stewart, said:
"This is a defining moment for the north-east transport infrastructure. The AWPR itself will bring so many benefits, but it is crucial to remember that it is much more than a road.
"It is in fact the hub of our strategy to create a new transport network for the region in the next decade and beyond.
"For example it paves the way for new park and ride sites, links rail freight transfer sites, and allows for a much-enhanced transport system around the airport.
"It also allows for new bus priority and cycling measures in the city, supports city-centre pedestrianisation in the long term, and helps improve city centre air quality.
"In effect it's not just about better, faster and more efficient road journeys. It is the single most important project for Nestrans as we pursue our ambition of a multi-modal network the region needs and deserves."
