ABERDEEN WESTERN PERIPHERAL ROUTE

The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) will provide new strategic route between the north, west and south of Aberdeen, linking the major roads heading into Aberdeen and taking through traffic away from the city.  The AWPR is being taken forward by the Scottish Executive’s new agency, Transport Scotland, in partnership with Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils and Nestrans.

Following consultation in spring 2005 on route options for the southern section of the road, the Minister for Transport announced the Executive’s chosen route option on 1 December 2005. This involves constructing the ‘Milltimber Brae’ route option, combined with an additional spur to Stonehaven, relieving traffic on the existing A90.  Further information on the detail of the route was published on 2 May 2006.

The draft road orders were published for consultation in December 2006.  Further details are available on the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route website.  Completion of the road is expected in 2012.

The AWPR is central to the Modern Transport System and has a key role in enabling other elements of the strategy to be delivered. It will provide improve journey times and relieve congestion on both city and rural roads and link with existing and new park and ride sites, which will further reduce the need for traffic to enter the city centre.

The benefits of the AWPR for both people and businesses will be felt across the north east.
