North east transport partnership Nestrans has welcomed today’s Airport Commission report, which backs a third Heathrow runway and recognises the importance of ‘protecting and bolstering existing domestic services into London.’

Nestrans Chairman, Councillor Ramsay Milne said, “The ease of connectivity to the UK hub and destinations worldwide is critical for success of the north east economy.

“The recommended expansion at Heathrow, along with the airport’s own commitment to establish measures to facilitate improved domestic connections, will help us to enhance vital links for Aberdeen to this major hub and its associated onward connectivity.”

Nestrans Director, Derick Murray, has played a key part in the National Connectivity Taskforce which has stressed and demonstrated the demand for services from the UK regions to the capital.

Mr Murray added, “As a region, we are operating in a global market and have to ensure the north-east has strong air links in place to remain competitive.

“Increased domestic flights to Heathrow will deliver significant economic benefits for regions across the UK, the north east included, allowing the whole of the UK to enhance their worldwide connectivity.”
