Aberdeen School Streets Pilot
Aberdeen City CouncilRun a School Street's pilot in Aberdeen
Promote Active Travel
Improve Air Quality
Increase physical activity
This project looks to run a ‘School Streets’ pilot in Aberdeen. School Streets are areas around schools where motorised traffic is restricted during pupil drop-off and pick-up times. This concept is already established in other parts of Scotland, the UK, and Europe, with much research and evaluation published. School Streets is one of the measures that can be employed to improve the safety of children and their caregivers on the journey to and from school, therefore encouraging more walking, wheeling and cycling for the school journey, and less reliance on the private car.
The main benefits of School Streets include:
- Reduced car traffic around schools
- Lower vehicle speeds on School Streets and surrounding streets
- Increased feelings of safety on the journey to school.
- Improved air quality on affected streets
- Increased physical activity, with more pupils walking, wheeling, and cycling to school.
Following a call for Expressions of Interest from schools, Aberdeen City Council are now exploring opportunities to introduce a School Street pilot at Greyhope School.
