    Project Updates

    Quarter 4

Cycling Scotland has worked with both Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council to provide high quality cycle parking and storage across the Nestrans Region.

Support has also been provided to Camphill School Aberdeen and St Cyrus Primary directly providing secure cycle storage facilities and bikes for pupils.
In coordination with Cycling Scotland’s, Cycling Friendly Schools assessor, Aberdeenshire Council identified 12 schools in need of cycle parking or storage or with damaged cycle parking in need of repair. With Nestrans funding, the council has been able to meet the requests from all schools identified, providing safe cycle parking and storage facilities for 200 bikes, benefitting pupils throughout the Aberdeenshire Council area. Cycle parking and storage facilities are scheduled for installation in late March 2025
    at the following schools.

    • Turriff Academy
    • Buchanhaven School
    • Redmyre Primary School
    • Kemnay Primary School
    • The Gordon Schools
    • Gordon Primary School
    • Port Elphinstone
    • Westhill Primary School
    • Portlethen Primary School
    • Auchenblae Primary School
    • Elrick School
    • Kellands Primary School
    • Following a change request additional funding has been awarded to provide 2 cycle hangars at Alford Community Campus.

With no previous record of the school cycle parking demand within Aberdeen City Council area, Cycling Scotland has engaged with schools in Aberdeen City Council to identify demand for cycle parking, surveying schools registered for the Cycling Friendly School Award. Working closely with Aberdeen City Council, the below listed schools were selected and appropriate facilities and supplier identified, providing cycle parking for 72 bikes.

    • Cutler Primary School
    • Dyce Primary School
    • Seaton Primary School
    • Greenbrae Primary School
    • Northfield Academy

Flexibility from Nestrans to meet the large demand for school cycle parking and storage with the reallocation of the general cycle storage fund has been pivotal, enabling the provision of safe cycle parking to pupils in both Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City.

Cycling Scotland has worked directly with St Cyrus Primary providing secure cycle storage for their existing fleet of bike, benefitting 120 pupils.
Camphill School Aberdeen is a day and residential school providing support children and young people with learning disabilities and complex additional support needs from across Scotland. With support from Cycling Scotland and Nestrans funding, a new bike store and bike recycling hub will benefit their existing cycle maintenance and bike refurbishing programme, benefitting 150 pupils. The requirement for secure cycle storage was identified during their Cycling Friendly School Award assessment.

Cycling Scotland has also supported Loirston Primary, through the Access to Bikes for Young People project.

Cycling Scotland is directly supporting each of the 19 funded schools to achieve the Cycling Friendly Schools award.

    • Including the 19 schools benefiting from funding, Cycling Scotland has supported 45 schools in the Nestrans region through the Cycling Friendly Schools Award, providing them with tailored advice and guidance to encourage more pupils to travel to school by bike. To date 15 schools have achieved the award. 13 of the engaged schools are secondaries.
    Quarter 3

There has been substantial demand for school cycle parking in Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council areas. As noted in Cycle Storage Q3 report, capacity challenges to progress a storage project may lead to a potential underspend of approximately £54,676. Following discussion with Nestrans a reallocation of budget to the Cycle parking in Schools project will enable funding Aberdeenshire Council in full to the value of £74,500 and provide £48,500 to provide school cycle parking in Aberdeen City.

We have been working closely with Aberdeen City Council, engaging with schools to identify demand for cycle parking. These schools include:

    • Culter Primary School
    • Dyce Primary School
    • Seaton Primary School
    • Greenbrae Primary School
    • Northfield Academy.

Aberdeen City Council has an existing framework for cycle storage with the supplier LockitSafe. Work is ongoing to provide de tailed costs for all 5 schools. Quote to date for 4 of these sites is £37,624.

Cycling Scotland has supported Loirston Primary School, working with the parent council to develop a project requesting funding for bikes to aid the delivery of cycle training and a container for storage. This project is being progressed through the Access to bikes for young people programme.

Cycling Scotland is supporting each of these schools to achieve their Cycling Friendly Schools award.

    Quarter 2

Engagement ongoing with schools participating in the Cycling Friendly Award programme across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Discussions have focused on demand for school cycle storage across both local authority areas. Aberdeenshire Council has worked with Cycling Scotland to develop cycle storage project and collated an extensive list of school cycle parking requirements to inform project costs for this work. St Cyrus Primary School has identified a need for secure storage for their fleet of 19 bikes, which are used for a local bike library and Bikeability training programs. Specification for suitable cycle storage has been identified and, subject to funding, the installation is scheduled to be completed early in the new year. The project will ensure that by spring, the bikes will be safely and efficiently stored to accommodate increased usage amongst pupils. The total value of the project is £3,542.00.

Aberdeenshire council have drawn up a summary of the school cycle parking needs in their area. This includes an estimated cost of £52,000 for new cycle storage and £22,500 for repair of existing shelters. This exceeds the current budget so schools with most acute need are being prioritised. £45,000 has been allocated for new cycle storage and the total available funding of £11,979.00 has been allocated for the repair of existing shelters.
Cycling Scotland are also in discussions with Aberdeen City Council to develop an application for the remaining funding available for claim and delivery during Q3/Q4.

    Quarter 1

Work is underway with two schools with request for improved cycle and scooter parking facilities. Contact has been made to establish further details on the needs and barriers to be addressed by these potential projects. Engagement and communication has been in place due to continued support to complete 23/24 funded cycle storage projects with Aberdeenshire Council and schools, including Harlaw Academy, Quarryhill Primary School and St Cyrus Nursery School.
