A new segregated walking, wheeling, and cycling route in Aberdeen which will improve active travel opportunities is open and ready for use. The improvements along Craigshaw Drive between the Shell Path and Wellington Road have extended the cycle network through West Tullos to Wellington Road. Members of the public are being asked to give their views on a Regional Active Travel Network for North East Scotland. Active travel is people-powered transport: walking, wheeling (such as wheelchairs, scooters, prams and buggies) and cycling. Improving routes for these options can help more people get to where they want to go, improve people’s health and reduce carbon emissions. Please note that CCTV will be in operation on Westburn Road and Hutcheon Street on Tuesday 20 February 2024. In order to encourage people to make more walking journeys between Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the City Centre, Aberdeen City Council have installed a number of benches on Westburn Road and Hutcheon Street. An £896,000 programme of improvements to the historic and popular Formartine and Buchan Way has begun. Once completed, the works – which form a major realignment of the existing National Cycle Network (NCN) – will enable even more people to walk, wheel and cycle, along with equestrian use, from Newmachar to Auchnagatt and beyond. Improvements to the Formartine & Buchan Way, the creation of a signed cycle network, and a much-needed bike recycling and reuse scheme, are among some of the North East projects set to benefit from funding.
